• The Man from Rio is an adventure comedy directed by Philippe de Broca, released in 1964. It is one of the great classics of popular French cinema, carried by Jean-Paul Belmondo at the peak of his form, energetic, funny, and totally committed to his own stunts. The film follows Adrien Dufourquet, a young soldier on leave, who finds himself unwittingly caught up in a frantic chase across Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and the Amazon rainforest to find his fiancée Agnès (Françoise Dorléac), who has been kidnapped because of a mysterious pre-Columbian statuette.Combining humor, exoticism, and a fast pace, the story is a series of adventures inspired by American pulp fiction and serials, with De Broca's typical lighthearted tone. The scenes in Rio, shot on location, give the film a sunny energy and an almost documentary-like feel to the city in the early 1960s. It is one of the French films that directly inspired Spielberg for Indiana Jones, particularly for its mix of action, romance, and incredible situations.
